GLL’s Marathon Walk for Sport Relief
On Saturday 5th March, more than 30 GLL staff and members are expected to participate in a marathon distance walk from Frome to Bath as part of the social enterprise’s efforts to raise more than £500,000 for Sport Relief.
As the UK’s largest provider of public gyms and leisure centres, operating facilities across the UK including Bath and Swindon, GLL’s Better brand is the official health and fitness partner for Sport Relief 2016.
Across the country, leisure centre staff, customers and partners are signing up to take part in some spectacular sporting challenges.
GLL exists to improve leisure services for all the community; the Frome to Bath walking challenge has been designed for people of all fitness abilities, whether they’re sporty or not.
As well as people signing up to walk the entire 26.2 miles marathon distance, participants can also join for the final five miles.
Mark Sesnan, MD of GLL said: “I am proud of the commitment our staff have shown in getting involved in difficult challenges like this marathon walk and supporting our Sport Relief partnership.
“Working together with the community, our staff have been fantastic fundraisers, advisers, coaches and advocates to our customers and partners, encouraging them improve their health and fitness while helping raise our target of £500,000 for Sport Relief.“
Melanie Silverman, Employer Brand Manager for GLL, who has signed up to the whole 26.2 mile walk, said: “I’ve never done anything like this before, so it’s very much a personal challenge as well as trying to raise money for a great cause.
“I must admit to being a little nervous about having to walk over 26 miles, especially as I’m not a natural born athlete, but I just keep focusing on how proud I’ll feel when I cross the finish line. There’s a real sense of camaraderie amongst our walkers in the office and we’ve been sharing training tips and blister stories!
“It’s really exciting being part of something as high profile as Sport Relief and knowing that the money we raise is going to worthwhile local and international causes makes it all worthwhile.”
The Frome to Bath walking challenge starts at Frome Station at 7am and finishes at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre.
