GLL Swimming Success Recognised with ASA Nominations

Leading leisure operator and charitable Social Enterprise GLL has been shorted listed in three categories for the prestigious 2015 Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) Swimming Awards.

The leisure operator has been nominated for the National Facility Operator of the Year Award, which recognises organisations that have demonstrated continued commitment to improving their aquatic programmes over the past 12 months, while ensuring community engagement and inclusivity.

A GLL swimming teacher, Harley Hicks, who works across the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest in addition to the former Olympic venue the London Aquatics Centre, has been nominated for the Swimming Teacher of the Year Award.

This award recognises a teacher who provides quality lessons, is motivated to improve their pupils’ standards and goes the extra mile to ensure they deliver the best quality learning experience for their pupils.

Woodhill Primary School, whose students attend the GLL-operated Waterfront Leisure Centre in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, has also been short-listed within the schools category, following its introduction of two-week intensive courses that comprise of ten, 60 minute sessions.

In this category the judges are looking for schools that have taken the appropriate steps to demonstrate proactive action to improve the delivery of their school swimming.

Commenting on the nominations, Andrew Clark, National Sports and Aquatics Manager at GLL said: “We are delighted to have been nominated across three, such diverse categories. In recent years .We’ve developed pool programmes to cope with the varied demands of pool users and innovated where necessary. We’ve introduced more effective intensive school swimming lessons and have worked hard to make conventional competitive pools more fun, for example by adding inflatable playgrounds. It is fantastic to see that our efforts have been recognised by the AS.”

GLL operates 106 swimming facilities across the UK under its Better brand. These range from traditional, listed open air pools such as Charlton Lido to family-focussed centres like Swindon Oasis to former Olympic venue the London Aquatics Centre.

The ASA Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday 14th November in Leamington Spa.
