Little Venice wins big award
Little Venice Sports Centre, operated by GLL, the UK’s largest charitable social enterprise, beat tough national competition last week at the UKactive and Matrix Flame Awards 2014 to be voted best in Britain, winning ‘Leisure Centre of the Year Streamline’.
After nearly three months of rigorous judging from top industry experts, the results were announced at a tense national awards ceremony, which took place at Telford International Centre and saw finalists from across the UK battle it out for the leisure industry crown, with the centre, based in Westminster, London, taking the award.
The UKactive and Matrix Flame Awards 2014 are notoriously tough, and as part of the judging process, the centre had to undergo stringent assessments, including a site visit from a panel of assessors. The final stage of judging took place last month, with an independent market research company conducting an in depth customer satisfaction survey. The great feedback given by customers saw the centre snatch victory ahead of the other finalists.
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director, GLL, said, “We could not be more delighted that our efforts and those of our team have been recognised, particularly having been up against such tough competition from across the country.
“The awards recognise the leisure centres, health clubs and group operators that have demonstrated exceptional standards across their operation. The fact that we have been acknowledged by experts within the leisure industry, and told that we are leisure centre of the year against other centres across the UK is absolutely fantastic.”
Cllr Steve Summers, Westminster City Council’s Cabinet Member for Sports, Leisure and Open Spaces, added, “The Flame Awards are the biggest of their kind in the leisure industry, so it’s a huge achievement for Little Venice to have beaten off some fierce competition and have taken the top prize.
“Winning this award also goes to show our commitment to providing access to high quality sporting facilities for Westminster residents, having recently expanded the gym facility at Little Venice.
“Those who regularly use the centre will know just how a good a place it is, but for those who don’t, I would say why not pop down to the Little Venice sports centre for a workout or use the courts there for a session of netball, basketball, or volleyball?
“The best streamline leisure centre in the country is right here in Westminster so why not make the most of it?”
David Stalker, CEO, ukactive, said, "Every year the quality of entrants just gets better and better. The Flame awards assessment process is known for being the most rigorous in the industry, so to go home with the top prize in your category is the ultimate endorsement of hard work, dedication and excellence. The Flame award winners are undeniably the best of the best and a credit to our sector".
Little Venice Sports Centre is operated by GLL, under their ‘Better’ brand, in partnership with Westminster City Council, who have recently redeveloped the fitness provision at the centre, from a 35 station gym to a 65 station gym, with new state of the art cardiovascular and resistance equipment.
