TV’s Jennifer Metcalfe leads GLL’s Better Bike Challenge for Sport Relief
‘Hollyoaks’ actress and qualified fitness instructor Jennifer Metcalfe today (1 March) launched GLL’s Better Bike Challenge - Britain’s biggest indoor bike ride for Sport Relief from the East Manchester Leisure Centre.
GLL’s customer facing brand Better saw its leisure centres across the nation throw open their doors to hundreds of people vowing to cycle a mile and give a pound to Sport Relief.
The UK’s leading leisure charitable social enterprise GLL made exercise bikes available at Manchester and at over 150 leisure centres nationally to help customers cycle themselves proud while raising £10,000 for Sport Relief.
The money is part of a £500,000 fundraising total the leisure provider has pledged to Sport Relief, helping to transform lives right here at home in the UK and in the world’s poorest communities.
Many members and non-members used the challenge to get back into the gym after the long winter or as part of their training ahead of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games, Friday 18th - Sunday 20th March.
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL said: “As the UK’s largest provider of public leisure facilities, we share Sport Relief’s mission to use sport to change lives for the better.
“Today’s bike challenge is a tremendous way for people to take exercise across the country and raise money for Sport Relief.” Charitable social enterprise GLL operates 230 leisure venues across the UK under the Better brand – up to half a million customers use its facilities each week – and subsidises community sport at grass roots level getting more people to take up exercise. Leisure centre staff, members and partners are all playing their part in the fundraising challenge - the biggest GLL has ever mounted - to make Sport Relief 2016 the best yet.”
Comic Relief Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Cahill, said: “We’re very proud to be working with GLL for Sport Relief and it’s been great to see so many GLL staff, members and non-members across the UK get involved. This is exactly what Sport Relief is all about, bringing the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives.” Cllr Rosa Battle, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure Manchester City Council, said: "Today's Sport Relief event at East Manchester Leisure Centre was a brilliant way for local residents to take advantage of the fantastic, state-of-the art facilities on offer, having fun getting fit, while raising funds for a wonderful cause." .”
