Message from Moira Gibb, Chief Executive
London Borough of Camden
Here in Camden, we pride ourselves on being able to provide first-class and affordable sport and physical activity services to meet the needs of local people. At the heart of our partnership with GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd), lies the shared belief that each and every Camden resident should have access to state-of-the-art facilities, distinct opportunities and high-quality activities, regardless of age or ability.
Our commitment to achieving this vision is clearly demonstrated through the refurbishment of Kentish Town Sports Centre, which is making excellent progress. Work began on the second phase of the redevelopment in January 2009, and with plans both on time and budget, we look forward to the arrival of another twenty-first century sports centre in the borough in autumn 2010.
By the end of March 2009, outdoor gym equipment will be up and running in a number of locations across the borough, giving all residents the opportunity to exercise outdoors for free. As one of only three London boroughs to have installed these facilities in our parks and open spaces, we are delighted to be able to offer another route for people in the borough to keep active.
With saving money at the top of everyone's agenda, it is now more important than for ever for us to be able to provide low cost activities for Camden people. From April 2009, we will be offering free swimming for all over 60s and uder 16s at Swiss Cottage and Oasis Sports Centres for the next two years. We also offer a range of free sports and physical activity sessions throughout the borough.
Last but not least, Camden's exercise referral programme is delivered with the support of GLL. The Camden Active Health Team helps more than 1,200 residents each year improve their health and manage chronic conditions and there are supervised physical activity sessions in all Camden leisure centres (and other community venues).
As the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games draw ever closer, now is the perfect time to start making the most of our wonderful facilities. This guide tells you what is on offer, where and when. We hope that you find it useful and take advantage of the wealth of leisure opportunities available in Camden.
