With the preparations for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games well under way, it has been an exciting time for Greenwich Council and GLL.
Several new initiatives have already started which means more Greenwich residents have had opportunities to keep fit and participate in sports than ever before.
The Government's free swimming initiative resulted in more than 16,000 free swimming
tickets being handed out at Greenwich pools to those 16 and under and 60+; the highest take-up in the South-East area. This helped Greenwich attain the second highest figure for increasing sports participation amongst all London boroughs last summer.
The on-going success of the award-winning Eltham Centre illustrates our commitment to
putting leisure, health and sports activities at the centre of Greenwich life.
Improving the facilities we have is a priority leading up to 2012 and will ensure the Olympic sporting legacy work is on target and will continue to benefit Greenwich residents beyond 2012. Greenwich Council and GLL have been proud to offer these services and look forward to more successes for Greenwich in 2010
Cllr John Fahy -- Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Olympics

Service Update
Due to the Government withdrawing its funding to Councils for the Swim4Life free swimming programme (16 and under and over 60s), the Government scheme will cease on 31 July 2010. Some Councils are choosing to continue to fund free swimming in their areas. Please visit the Borough page to see if the scheme is continuing.
