Remedial works taking place at the Centre have been progressing to ensure that additional facilities open to the public from Monday 15 March.
Following the reopening of the Fitness Centre, Studio and crèche, the large and small pools will reopen from Monday with a normal pool programme operating from this date.
Schools and customers on swimming lessons will continue with their current course at other centres and return to Atherton at the beginning of next term following the Easter period.
Please continue to check for updates regarding other areas of the building including Rascals, the health suite and bowls area.
We would like to thank users of the leisure centre for their patience while the works are carried out and apologise for any inconvenience this closure has caused.
In 2012 Newham will jointly host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, welcoming the world's finest athletes to Newham. But it's important for us to start getting fit now and prove that Newham is leading the way to a healthier future.
We want to encourage Newham's young athletes to train and realise their potential in time for the Games. Whether you aspire to compete in the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games, or just simply want to keep fit, the borough's four leisure centres are an excellent place to start introducing physical activity into your lifestyle. We've made sure that all the facilities are affordably priced and we regularly offer free swimming for children.
There's a whole range of state-of-the-art facilities to take advantage of including gyms, swimming pools, a climbing wall, sauna and steam rooms and sports halls, so you don't need to be bored or find exercise a chore.
We all need to put our best foot forward to narrow the health gap between Newham and the rest of the UK and whether you want to enjoy getting fit as a social activity or prefer a good workout on your own, visiting your local leisure centre is certainly a step in the right direction.
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham
