Leisure Centres in Sutton

Sutton Free Swimming Scheme Update

Part of Sutton Council's over 60s free swimming programme will continue despite a cut in government funding

Residents who are 60 or over will still be able to swim for free at Westcroft and Cheam leisure centres.

Sutton received £47,000 a-year from the Government for the swimming programme, which allowed those aged 60 or over to swim at any time in the borough's leisure centres.

Cllr Graham Tope, Executive Member for Community Safety, Leisure and Libraries on Sutton Council, said: "This is a bit of good news for the programme which provides a really important service to our elderly residents.  I'm pleased we can continue to offer free swimming for the over 60s."

From 1 August if you are over 60 and a resident of the borough you will be able to swim free of charge at public swimming times between 8.00am-4.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Swimming is particularly beneficial for the elderly as it offers low impact exercise and helps with mobility.

A new free membership card will be issued at the leisure centres to allow entry.

London Borough of Sutton (LBS) and GLL working together to provide quality leisure, Recreation and Sports facilities to all Sutton residents.

The London Borough of Sutton Council is delighted to have entered in to a new partnership with GLL.

From 1st April 2007 GLL will be managing four of Sutton's best known sporting facilities Cheam Leisure Centre, Sutton Arena Leisure Centre, The Phoenix Centre and Westcroft Leisure Centre.

GLL is an employee-owned, not-for-profit social enterprise and this means that they can invest more time, effort and resource into successfully managing community facilities.

They have a wealth of experience working within the leisure sector and currently operate more than 70 public leisure centres within the M25 area, in partnership with ten London boroughs.

Working closely in partnership with the council the service will be further developed to provide all members of the community with a range of cost-effective health activity and fitness packages. These will range from full monthly memberships to pay as you go and off-peak options to suit all requirements and budgets.

LBS and GLL are excited about this new partnership and are looking forward to working together.
