Temporary closure of Atherton Leisure Centre
UPDATE: 1 February 2010
Atherton Leisure Centre remains temporarily closed following the discovery of asbestos during a routine health and safety inspection.
The substance was found in the plant room in the basement of the centre, an area not accessible to the public.
Routine air samples taken in the public areas of the centre have come back clear.
Newham Council is implementing a programme of works to remove the asbestos. The centre will remain closed while the substance is carefully removed from the premises.
The council is working hard to minimise disruption and the centre will be open as soon as work has been completed.
We would like to thank users of the leisure centre for their patience while the works are carried out and apologise for any inconvenience this closure has caused.
Other leisure facilities in Newham remain open. They are available at:
Balaam Leisure Centre, Balaam Street, Plaistow
East Ham Leisure Centre, Barking Road, East Ham
Newham Leisure Centre, Prince Regent Lane, Plaistow
Online memberships for swim LONDON and gym LONDON available at this centre
