FREE SWIMMING LESSONS
Now adults who have never learned to swim can try our new introductory course of lessons.
If you have a fear of the water, can't get your face wet or panic just thinking about the deep end then it's easy to think swimming is not for you. However, if you learn to swim you can have fun in the water with your friends, children and grandchildren. You can also make a splash in the water while on holiday.
The important thing to know is that you are not alone. One in five adults across the country can't swim - but it's never too late to learn.
GLL have teamed up with the ASA, the governing body for swimming to give adults unable to swim (and over the age of 17 years) a helping hand.
Whatever reason or excuse you have for not learning to swim, this is an opportunity that can change your life.
Swimming is a great leisure activity - in addition to keeping you safe it can also keep you healthy and improve your fitness.
It's never too late to learn and here is your chance to have 6 hours of free tuition with a qualified teacher specially trained in teaching adult non swimmers.
The scheme will be available in 40 pools across London. Courses will take place throughout the year at a variety of different times and days, and there are up to 25,000 places available on the scheme.
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN.
Just fill in the application form selecting your preferred options and we'll be in touch when a course that suits you becomes available. Don't forget to give us a valid email address to keep in contact.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is available from this new introductory course? A free 6 hour introduction to swimming lessons with a qualified ASA Level 2 teacher, specially trained in teaching adult non swimmers. There will be between 8-12 pupils in each group, all of which will be part of the introduction to the new swimming lesson scheme
- When will the classes take place? Courses will take place throughout the year at a variety of different times and days either on a weekly basis or on an intensive daily basis. Once the application form has been filled in we'll be in touch when a course that matches your preferences becomes available
- Who will contact us about our free lessons? A Swimming Coordinator will be in touch to confirm a day and times for your lessons once this has been sorted. This will depend on the volume of applications and availability to suit your preferences. The scheme is taking place over the next 12 months and we will be planning courses to meet demand
- Why can't my course start immediately? We need to ensure funding is spent effectively and therefore courses will be planned to meet preferences and will commence where there is sufficient demand. The minimum number of participants required to start each course is 8
- Can I book and apply for more than one course? No. A condition of the funding is that each person may only participate in one free course
- Will I be able to swim after 6 hours of tuition? There is no guarantee but we will do our best. Our main aim at the end of the course will be to ensure you are more confident in the water and at the end of the course suggest the next step for you to progress, whether that is an additional course of lessons, regular swimming participation or the Olympic Games
- I have just paid for a course of swimming lessons and have found out about the lessons I could get for free. Can I get a refund? No, you will not be able to get a refund. These free swimming sessions aren't replacing the lessons you are enrolled on. They are funded as an introduction to swimming lessons for adult non swimmers and part of the restrictions of funding requires that they are an additional provision to our existing lesson programme. If this is your first course of lessons booked you can always apply for the free introduction to swimming lessons as well to use as additional lesson but they won't necessarily be taking place at your chosen centre, start date or time
