Building on Legacy of 2012
GLL runs Olympic themed competition for Hackney Primary Schools
As part of the launch activities for two newly refurbished leisure centres, GLL organised an open weekend for local primary schools at Kings Hall Leisure Centre and Britannia Leisure Centre in Hackney.
Celebrating investment
From javelin and discus to fitness circuits and mini-hockey, pupils from eight Hackney Primary Schools were invited to an inter-schools, Olympic themed competition. Around 160 nine to ten year-olds took part in 25 minute sessions throughout the day, ensuring children experienced all activities.
Celebrating significant investment in the development of Hackney Leisure Centres in the build-up to the 2012 olympics, the day was also designed to encourage young people's long-term engagement with health and fitness opportunities in the borough.
Free guest pass for every child
Each child received a goody bag including a Kidz Wellness Guest Pass for the two leisure centres. Out to give youngsters a taste for sporting activities, the pass entitles pupils to sample activities on offer such as the Rascals Adventure Playzone and Badminton Club.
Organised by GLL's Community Development Officer (CDO) in conjunction with the Schools Sport Partnership, the day was both educational and fun. Schools were chosen to take part based on their locality and physical educational needs -- in many cases bringing health and fitness opportunities to children that might not normally take part.
