Widening Access & Opportunity

GLL join forces with Hackney Council to promote physical activity choices to disabled people of all ages and abilities

480 disabled people trying new sports

During 2009 over 480 disabled people of all ages and abilities took part in three disability open days at Hackney Leisure Centres.  The events called Activity for All are designed to inspire disabled people across the borough to try out new sports, realise their potential and come together with their family and carers to enjoy a day of free activities.

Adults and Juniors alike got the opportunity to try Trampoline, Wheelchair Basketball, Athletics, Kayaking, Dance, Swimming, Judo and a gym workout.  There was also sensory equipment, soft play and alternative therapy to add some relaxation to the day.

What a Hackney Council Cabinet Member says

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: "Hackney Disability Open Days are a fantastic way for residents to enjoy trying different sports and making new friends. As Hackney is a host borough for the 2012 Games, the Council hopes we can inspire residents of all abilities to get active and take part in new activities."

Partnership makes it all possible

Activity for All disability open days are the result of multiagency partnership between GLL, Hackney Council Olympic & Paralympic Unit, Hackney Council Adult Learning Difficulties Service, NHS City & Hackney Community Health Services, Hackney Ark resource centre and the Learning Trust.
