As a leading social enterprise we recognise our responsibility to actively manage our impact on the environment in collaboration with our partners. The use of energy and water is vital in the delivery of GLL's services and represents a significant proportion of our operating costs.
What we have achieved so far.
- Reduced like for like centre energy consumption by 6.5% in 2009 compared with 2008
- Staff awareness training carried out at all centres
- Energy Champion identified at every centre
- Environmental standard ISO:14001 in Sutton and Reading
- Recycling initiatives planned and ongoing in all GLL partnerships
- Implemented an automatic metering strategy
- Launched our first Energy Saving Technology Pilot
- Renewable energy pilot to be installed in April 2010
- Investment programme for energy saving technologies introduced, including pool covers variable speeds drives and low energy lighting
- 15 new swimming pool covers installed to reduce heating loss and gas consumption
- 14 centres fitted with variable speed drives to reduce electricity consumption by large motors
- LED and high frequency low energy lighting installed in many centres as part of ongoing refurbishment and upgrade
- 78 energy champions trained in 2009
