GLL to Run Cardiff Leisure Centres from 1st December
GLL - the UK’s leading leisure charitable social enterprise – will formally begin its partnership with Cardiff City Council to manage and operate eight Cardiff Leisure Centres from Thursday 1st December.
The not-for-profit company, in partnership with Cardiff City Council, will invest £4.5 million in the Welsh Capital’s leisure estate in a 15 year agreement aimed at getting more people more active more often. It heralds a new era for leisure in Cardiff, with improvements in facilities and a drive to increase participation across all sectors of the community.
With extensive experience of running over 300 leisure facilities across the UK, GLL will bring sustainability to the service, provide unparalleled career development opportunities for staff and place a key emphasis on customer care.
Mark Sesnan, MD of GLL said:
“It’s very much business as usual for leisure centre staff and customers this week following handover.
“What they will notice going forward are the benefits our social enterprise operation brings to these eight centres – through boosting participation and investment in improved services and facilities.
“We know Cardiff City Council have thought carefully about this decision - we intend to do them and the people of Cardiff proud.”
As a values based organisation, GLL will listen to and work with all stakeholders to make sure its community ethos is put into practice in Cardiff. GLL will also be following the Workforce Code of practice that exists in Wales.
A staff-owned co-op, GLL has no shareholders to pay and can instead invest in improvements to services– including community programmes to boost sporting participation and improve the health and wellbeing of residents.
One of GLL’s most significant investments is in the GLL Sports Foundation, assisting elite athletes to sporting excellence.
