Islington Tennis Centre & Gym serves up £1.8m improvements
Improvements at Islington Tennis Centre and Gym on Market Road N7, were formally unveiled by Islington Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Janet Burgess last week (Thursday 3 November).
The £1.8m upgrade features a 60 station gym extension, a 30% larger fitness class studio, new health suite and sauna, new changing rooms, new reception area and energy-saving LED lighting.
The Tennis Centre is open all year round with 6 indoor courts and 2 outdoor floodlit courts. One of the best used public tennis facilities in the country, it’s the perfect place for local residents to learn how to play, improve their technique or have a casual game with friends.
Former UK Women’s No. 1 Anne Keothavong honed her skills here.
Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing said:
“We’re committed to helping our residents get active, stay healthy and enjoy a good quality of life.
“I am very excited about the Tennis Centre transformation and I am sure that it will help current users to continue to visit, whilst encouraging other residents to try out the facilities for the first time.
“These improvements are part of our ongoing, wider commitment to improving Islington’s leisure centres in partnership with GLL.”
GLL, which runs 10 Islington leisure facilities under its Better brand, is working in partnership with Islington Council to get residents more active, more often with an affordable and accessible leisure offer for all ages.
The upgrades – the largest investment in a generation – mean Islington residents will be able to enjoy some of London’s best public leisure facilities while knowing that the charitable social enterprise that delivers the service, re-invests all surpluses into facilities, community sports programmes, elite athlete support, health and wellbeing.
Anthony Jarrett, GLL Centre Manager for Islington Tennis Centre and Gym & Market Road Pitches said:
“I am absolutely delighted with the refurbishment. It has really taken the centre onto the next level.
“Our existing customers and new users will be guaranteed an outstanding experience in a top class community facility.”
Islington Boxing Club’s Cherrelle Brown (Team GB 64kg Boxing Champion), who uses the Islington Tennis Centre & Gym’s facilities for her training, joined the event and spoke about her own sporting journey, helped in part by a grant through the GLL Sports Foundation. She said:
“The money I received through the Sports Foundation and Islington Council has been key to my success - allowing me to buy gloves and protective kit.
“That and free access to the gym has made all the difference. I would not have been able to reach the level I have without it.”
