Social enterprises partner to launch new Brixton nursery

Children under five and their parents in Brixton can look forward to a brand new nursery opening this September, just two minutes from Brixton tube.

The nursery will be located in the Brixton Recreation Centre, operated by GLL, the UK’s largest leisure charitable social enterprise under their ‘Better’ brand, and will be run by London Early Years Foundation (LEYF), the UK’s largest social enterprise nursery group.

Children will have access to all the facilities in the recreation centre, including outdoor sports areas and a huge indoor soft play area. All facilities, toys and equipment will be brand new, and it will also include a crèche for parents who use the ‘Better’ gym.

“We’re incredibly excited to open our 27th nursery, in partnership with GLL. At LEYF, we aim to extend and enrich children’s learning so that every child has a brilliant nursery experience. Working in partnership with parents and the local community is a very important part of our nursery model, so we’re really looking forward to joining the Brixton and ‘Better’ community,” said June O-Sullivan, Chief Executive of LEYF.

Mark Sesnan, Managing Director, GLL, said, “As a not-for-profit charitable social enterprise, our aim is to offer top class, affordable facilities to the local community. We reinvest any financial surplus back into the facilities that we operate, so are very proud that this new nursery, run in partnership with LEYF, will offer crucial, early years education to our local children, providing a positive impact for both parents and children long into the future.”

The new nursery marks an important step in LEYF’s ambitious plans to double the number of nurseries it operates over the next two years, so more of London’s children have the best start in life.

June O’Sullivan, said, “We want to grow because we know that early years education is critical to a child’s long-term success and helps give them the best chance of becoming a healthy, happy and successful young adult. We reinvest all our profits in giving this opportunity to as many London children from as many backgrounds as possible.”
