Archway residents get active as Leisure Centre celebrates £2m investment
Archway Leisure Centre was officially re-launched on Tuesday 26 January following a £2m investment that has extended the gym, installed new equipment and refreshed the pool hall.
Leading leisure charitable social enterprise GLL took over the 15 year contract for managing Islington Council’s eight leisure facilities in April 2014 when a £10m investment in accessible leisure was also confirmed.
Archway Leisure Centre is provided under GLL’s customer brand ‘Better’. Its refurbishment is the second one completed, following Cally Pool’s £400,000 upgrade in 2015.
The investment increases Archway’s fitness equipment to 122 stations including new weights, treadmills, rowing machines, cross-trainers and resistance machines plus an extra 254sqm of fitness space.
To minimise disruption to existing users, Archway stayed open for customers throughout the improvement work.
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL said:
“As the UK’s leading leisure operator, we help more people be active, more often.
“Our Archway refurbishment is creating affordable opportunities for the local community to swim, run, cycle and gym as part of a healthier and better life.”
New changing rooms, re-located poolside sauna, improvements to Reception, self-service kiosks and reduced customer congestion complete upgrade of Archway Leisure Centre.
Islington Council’s Deputy Leader and executive member for health and wellbeing, Cllr Janet Burgess, said: “The council is committed to supporting all of our residents to live healthy, independent lives. The fantastic new facilities at Archway Leisure Centre provide local people in the north of the borough with the perfect opportunity to get involved, try something new, and stay fit.”
“We’d like to thank all the customers who have coped with the disruption during the renovation work.”
Those attending the free event took part in a master spin class, gym challenges and a raffle draw for a colour TV, three months’ free membership and three free personal training sessions.
Children from St Joseph’s School and Hargrave Park School enjoyed a family fun swim in the pool’s waves, water slide and rapids.
