We are reducing our impact on the environment through actions such as less reliance on fossil fuels and minimising waste; and working closely on joint actions with our local authority partners.
Our progress
We are committed to becoming Carbon net zero by 2050 with an ambition to hit this targe sooner, achieving a 23% reduction to date.
Invested over £5m into energy reduction measures, such as low energy lighting, pool covers and energy efficient motor controls over the last 5 years.
Have reduced like-for-like energy consumption by a further 5% in 2025, that's a total reduction of 20% over 5 years.
Offset carbon emissions by over 1,200 t/CO2e through on-site generation of solar electricity in 2025.
Our venues now have over 110 solar PV arrays generating nearly 7mkWh of green electricity, over 6% of total demand .
Achieved an average 48% recycling rate across all facilities in 2025, with all food waste sent for composting or electricity generation.
Committed to ensure no waste from our centres and libraries goes to landfill through our corporate waste agreements.
Achieved ISO14001:2015 environmental management accreditation and are certified a certified carbon literate organisation.
Launched CIMSPA CPD accredited Sustainability training in 2024 with over 100 Managers having completed the sessions so far.
Introduction of UK's first biodegradable Library Cards as part of our commitment to the Green Libraries Manifesto.

- Implement water reduction strategy to deliver 5% reduction
- Stock a range of sustainable and healthy food products in our catering outlets.
- Work closely with our local authority partners on Government funding schemes to further reduce energy consumption and carbon reduction.
