GLL Wins at UK active Awards 2022

GLL is celebrating winning at the UK active Awards - the UK Leisure Industry’s most prestigious awards for excellence and best practice across the sector, returning after a two year pandemic hiatus.

Appearing among a roll call of high street name fitness and leisure operators, local councils, sports bodies and charities, GLL's' win in the New Concept, Build or Design of the Year Category for Britannia Leisure Centre, Hackney cemented the charitable social enterprise's role at the heart of community health and wellbeing.

GLL centres and staff played an important role in the national recovery from the Covid pandemic – activating local communities to support health and wellbeing.

This was reflected in GLL achieving multiple finalist nominations.

Centre and individuals were scored under the strictest standards with mystery shopping and customer voting used to determine the outright winners.

This year's awards ceremony took place in Birmingham on 30 June as part of Active Uprising, UK active’s conference celebration of physical activity, recognising excellence throughout the sport, leisure and health and fitness sector.

Speaking from the UK active Awards, Mark Sesnan, CEO of GLL said: “We are justifiably proud of Britannia Leisure Centre's win at this year’s UK active Awards.

“In addition, our charitable social enterprise achieved multiple finalist positions in a field of strong competition - so I'm really pleased to see our fantastic staff, venues and programmes independently recognised on their merits."

“Congratulations to all the worthy winners – on the evidence of these awards the leisure sector seems vitally important to the UK’s health and wellbeing.”

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “This year’s finalists and winners deserve to be recognised as an inspiration to the sector but also to the whole nation.

“Congratulations to everyone who took part for showcasing the undeniable resilience, dedication and creativity that will lead our sector over the coming years.

“The ukactive Awards generate so much energy and positivity within our sector, as well as a healthy dose of competition.

“Thank you to each and every individual and organisation for your unrelenting commitment and passion behind our mission to get more people, more active, more often.”
