ukactive Awards 2022

GLL is among the most nominated names in the ukactive Awards 2022, securing an impressive 11 nominations in 5 categories.

The ukactive Awards are the UK Leisure Industry’s most prestigious awards for excellence and best practice across the sector.

The shortlist includes GLL-operated centres that are playing an important role in the national recovery from the pandemic as well as inspirational individuals who are activating local communities.

Appearing among a roll call of high street name fitness and leisure operators, local councils, sports bodies and charities, GLL's multiple nominations reflect the charitable social enterprise's role at the heart of community health and wellbeing across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Winning centres undergo a rigorous independent assessment of their facilities - including mystery shopping - and individuals go forward to a public vote

When the awards were last run in 2019, GLL prevailed in three categories -  Rainbow Leisure Centre was awarded Best Club/Centre of the Year for the London Region and Olympia Leisure Centre was also named winner for the Northern Ireland & Wales Region.

In addition, GLL employee Haider Ali was awarded Unsung Hero, for his work at Wembley Leisure Centre.

This year's awards ceremony takes place in Birmingham on 30 June as part of Active Uprising, ukactive’s conference celebration of physical activity, recognising excellence throughout the sport, leisure and health and fitness sector.

Mark Sesnan, CEO of GLL said: “We are incredibly honoured by our big showing among the shortlist of this year’s ukactive Awards.

“As a charitable social enterprise, we exist to deliver excellent leisure facilities and services in the communities that we serve and to help get more people more active, more often.

"The pandemic has created deep challenges for the health and wellbeing of local communities but we are proud to be at the centre of the national recovery.

“We are so pleased to see our fantastic staff, venues and programmes independently recognised on their merits."

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “We are delighted but not surprised by the number of incredible entries and stories we have received for this year’s ukactive Awards, which is testament to the unquestionable resilience and innovation within our sector.

“We are extremely proud of all of our members, who have worked so hard in rebuilding the sector and our nation’s health, as we mark just over a year since facilities were allowed to reopen."
