The GLL Sport Foundation is the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK and is focussed on transforming people’s lives, inspiring and promoting community skills and cohesion through sport and physical activity.
Since the Foundation launched in 2008 it has provided over 13,000 athlete awards across Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports at a total support value of over £11million.
The Foundation now focuses over £360,000 direct cash to this cohort of athletes per annum. 96% of supported athletes receive no other centralised support. GLL is the UK’s largest leisure and culture social enterprise and operates 270 sport and leisure facilities through its customer brand, Better.
Athletes supported by the GLL Sport Foundation get training access to all GLL-managed venues.
The GLL Sport Foundation works in partnership with its key partners SportsAid, SportsAid Wales and the Mary Peters Foundation.
This year’s announcements came as many athletes are training to be picked for Team GB’s IAAF 2019 and Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020 squads. GSF funded athletes won 20 medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Supported ambassador GB taekwondo and double Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad explains the impact the Foundation makes: “With the support of the Foundation I have been able to transition from a skinny kid into an Olympic medallist”.
Support in Action
The programme is operated across local authority and public sector areas in which GLL operate. Here is an example of how the support is making a direct impact to athletes in Belfast.
Partnership is Key
The programme works in direct partnership with local authority and public sector partners and also vitally a significant amount of sponsors and supporters that make the financial operation of the programme possible.
