The GLL Sport Foundation is the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK and is focussed on transforming people’s lives, inspiring and promoting community skills and cohesion through sport and physical activity.
Since the Foundation launched in 2008 it has provided over 13,000 athlete awards across Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports at a total support value of over £7.6million.
89% of supported athletes receive no other centralised support, and with 73% of award recipients being aged under 21 GLL is focussed on supporting the next generation of athletes with the right support.
The Foundation now focuses over £250,000 direct cash to this cohort of athletes per annum.
Supported ambassador GB taekwondo and double Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad explains the impact the Foundation makes “With the support of the Foundation I have been able to transition from a skinny kid into an Olympic medallist”.
For more information on the Foundation please find the 2016 Annual Review.
Support in Action
The programme is operated across local authority and public sector areas in which GLL operate. Here is an example of how the support is making a direct impact to athletes in Belfast.
Partnership is Key
The programme works in direct partnership with local authority and public sector partners and also vitally a significant amount of sponsors and supporters that make the financial operation of the programme possible.
