National Fitness Day brings Communities to GLL centres
More than 174,000 visitors experienced a range of free sports and taster sessions
National Fitness Day (16 September) brought more people than ever into the 250 'Better' leisure centres run by charitable social enterprise GLL.
GLL teamed up with its leisure sector body ukactive in the initiative to get the nation moving.
With a challenge to 'get active', GLL offered free taster sessions in swimming, gym, pickleball, aquarobics, yoga, athletics and more.
People of all ages flocked to their local Better centres from Cumbria to Cornwall and from Belfast to Cardiff to experience the joy of movement and social interaction.
Among those endorsing National Fitness Day in GLL venues were MPs Afzal Khan who attended a yoga class at Sugden Leisure Centre in Manchester and Jo Stevens who visited Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff to meet staff and find out more about local initiatives to get communities more active and enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of sporting participation and exercise.
“Welcoming more than 174,000 people through our doors on National Fitness Day helps create healthier and happier communities across the country.
"Healthy habits inspired by this initiative can last a lifetime and bring many more years of active participation and personal wellbeing."
Cameron Saunders, CEO of ukactive said: "It's great to see MPs visiting their local gyms, good ls and leisure facilities so they can witness first-hand the impact ukactive members are having on the mental and physical wellbeing of their communities.
"Through supporting our mission of more people more active more often, fitness and leisure facilities are helping millions of people lead healthier happier and better-connected lives."
